The Bureau's main reception site for NOAA polar orbiting data is Crib Point, with additional sites at Melbourne (until June 2004), Casey, Darwin and Perth. The Bureau archives the 5 channels of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Local Area Coverage (LAC) data for Melbourne, Casey and Darwin while the Perth data is archived by WASTAC. TIP data [High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS), Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU), Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU) and Data Collection Platform (DCP) data components] received in Melbourne are also archived.

This service provides free access to browse images (1:8 resolution) for NOAA Channel 4 (Infrared) to assist with the selection of required dates and times for ordering higher resolution images or radiances from the Bureau's Satellite Data Archive. The images/links in each page can then be viewed individually, or as an animated loop of the selected channel. The option is provided to adjust the number of images or links in each page. A default option of 4 for images and 14 for links has been set, however this may be increased to allow longer loops. Increasing the size of the loop will increase the time to load. The time on each browse image is the start time of the reception of the top of the orbit pass. The metadata shows the area covered by the pass and the arrow indicates whether the pass is northbound or southbound . Northbound orbit passes will appear "upside down" as the top of the pass will represent the southern boundary for the start of reception.

The browse service is only available for NOAA 12 and 14 data from 1 July 1999 and NOAA 15 data from 25 November 1999. Data for the Perth reception site is not yet available. During the first week of each month the browse images for the previous month will be added. Additional orbit location information is in the process of being added to this service.

Charges apply to extraction of high resolution data from the archive. Quotes for provision of this data in the format, projection and on the medium required can be obtained by clicking on the "Feedback" tab at the top of this page, then select "Satellite Images" and fill in the required details.
