The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) has detected an undersea earthquake the Aleutian Islands, and has issued a No Tsunami Threat Bulletin for Australia.

 

Based on the magnitude and location of this earthquake there is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland or islands.

 

No further bulletins will be issued for this event unless the threat level changes.

 

The earthquake occurred at 17:08 UTC 01/08/2007 at Latitude 15.5 South, Longitude 167.9 East, with magnitude 6.9.

TSUNAMI THREAT TO CHRISTMAS AND COCOS ISLANDS AND THE WA COAST FROM CARNARVON TO EXMOUTH.

 

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) has detected an undersea earthquake south of Java and has issued a Potential Tsunami Threat Bulletin.

 

Based on the magnitude and location of this earthquake, tsunami could start affecting these locations at the following local times:

 

CHRISTMAS ISLAND from 3:35pm Monday
COCOS ISLAND from 4:15pm Monday
CORAL BAY (WA) from 7:00pm Monday

 

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre is seeking confirmation that tsunami have been generated. Tsunami Warnings will be issued, if necessary, by the Regional Offices of the Bureau of Meteorology in affected States. People in coastal areas in threatened regions should move out of the water and away from low lying foreshore areas, and should then listen for further advice from state emergency service authorities.

 

The earthquake occurred at 0819 UTC 17 Jul 2006 at Latitude 9.3 South, Longitude 107.3 East, with magnitude 7.7.

No significant sea level rises have been observed at Australian locations, thus there is now no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland or islands.

 

No further bulletins will be issued for this event unless the threat level changes.

 

The earthquake occurred at 0819 UTC 17 Jul 2006 at Latitude 9.3 South, Longitude 107.3 East, with magnitude 7.2.

NEW SOUTH WALES TSUNAMI WARNING

 

Issued at 0908 on Monday the 2nd of April 2007

 

For people in coastal areas of New South Wales, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island

 

An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 8.1 occurred at 06:40 am EST this morning near the Solomon Islands, [epicentre 8.6S, 157.2E] and may have generated a tsunami.

 

At the time of this warning a Tsunami has been detected. Further monitoring is taking place to determine the extent and severity of the threat.

 

A series of waves associated with this tsunami may impact Australia later this morning, reaching Norfolk Island from around midday [Norfolk Island time], Lord Howe Island from around 11 am [Lord Howe Island time] and the NSW coastline starting from between 10:15 am EST and midday. [Sydney region most likely around 11:30 am EST onwards].

 

Dangerous waves and currents may affect beaches, harbours and rivers for several hours from the time of impact and low-lying coastal areas could be flooded. The waves can be separated in time by between ten to sixty minutes and the first wave of the series may not be the largest.

 

The NSW State Emergency Service advises that:
