Destructive tsunamis have occurred in all of the world's oceans and seas. The following table lists many of these, along with the cause and the estimated number of deaths. More information can be found on some of the tsunamis listed below by clicking on the date.
365, Jul 21 - Alexandria. Generated by earthquake. 50,000 + deaths.
1692, Jun 7 - Port Royal, Jamaica. Generated by earthquake. Thousands of deaths.
1707 - Japan. Generated by earthquake. 30,000 deaths.
1755, Nov 1 - Lisbon, Portugal. Waves 6-15m high generated by earthquake. 10,000-60,000 deaths.
1868, Aug 8 - Arica, Chile. 15m wave generated by earthquake. Thousands of deaths.
1883, Aug 26-27 - Krakatoa, Indonesia. Generated by eruption of volcano. 36,000 deaths. Learn more about the 1883 tsunami.
1896, Jun 15 - Honshu, Japan. 30m wave generated by earthquake; destroyed 280 km coastline. 27,122 deaths.
1908, Dec 28 - Messina in Sicily and Italian coastal cities. Earthquake and 8m wave. 120,000 deaths.
1923, Sep 1 - Sagami Bay, Kanto Plain, Atami and Nebukawa, Japan. Earthquake, fire, mudslide and 11 m wave. 145,000 deaths.
1929, Nov 18 - Grand Banks, Newfoundland. Triggered by a sub-marine landslide and earthquake. 29 deaths.
1933, Mar 3 - Sanriku, Japan. Generated by earthquake. 2,990 deaths.
1946, Apr 1 - Hilo, Hawaii and Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Generated by earthquake on Unimak Island, Alaska, creating waves up to 35m high. 165 deaths. Learn more about the 1946 tsunami.
1952, Nov 4 - Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Triggered by earthquakeProperty damage, no human lives were lost. Learn more about the 1952 tsunami.
1957, Mar 9 - Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Also Hawaii. Triggered by earthquake south of the Andreanof Islands. Thanks to a timely alarm from the International Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at Honolulu, no human lives were lost. Learn more about the 1957 tsunami.
1958, Jul 9 - Lituya Bay, Alaska. Earthquake caused huge slab of ice and rock to fall off nearby glacier into bay; giant splash formed tsunami. 3 deaths.
1960, May - Chile. Generated by a series of earthquakes. 2,300 deaths. Learn more about the 1960 tsunami.
1960, May - Hilo, Hawaii. Generated by a series of earthquakes (same as Chile on the same date). 61 deaths.
1964, Mar 28 - Prince William Sound, Alaska. An earthquake and subsequent landslides generated a series of tsunamis, the highest reaching close to 30 m. 130 deaths. Learn more about the 1964 tsunami.
1975, Nov 29 - Island of Hawaii. Earthquake off the coast of the Island of Hawaii generated waves between 2m and 15m high. 2 deaths.
1976, Aug 17 - Mindanao, Philippines. Generated by earthquake. 8,000 deaths.
1979, Jul 18 - Lomblem Island, Indonesia. 2m wave generated by volcano collapse. 539 deaths.
1979, Oct 16 - Nice, France. Undersea landslides generated 2 tsunamis one week apart. 23 deaths.
1992, Sep 1 - Nicaragua. Earthquake caused series of waves 11 m high. 170 deaths.
1992, Dec 12 - Flores Island & Babi Island. Series of tsunamis, generated by earthquake. Waves ranging from 5 m to 25m high, depending where they hit.1690 dead in Flores, 263 dead in Babi.
1993, Jul 12 - Island of Okushiri, Japan. Underwater earthquake generated waves 5 to 30m high. 200+ deaths.
1994, Jun 3 - Eastern Java, Indonesia. Earthquakes caused series of waves more than 60 m high. 223 deaths.
1994, Nov 11 - Mindoro Island. Generated by earthquake. Waves 7m high. 70 deaths.
1995, Oct 9 - Jalisco, Mexico. Generated by earthquake. Waves 11m high. 1 death.
1996, Jan 1 - Minahassa Peninsula, area of Sulawesi.Generatedby earthquake. Waves 4m high. 24 deaths.
1996, Feb 17 - Biak, Irian Java. Generated by earthquake. Waves ranging from 5 to 10m high. 161 deaths.
1996, Feb 21 - North Coast of Peru. Generated by earthquake. Waves 5 m high. 12 deaths.
1998, Jul 17 - Papua New Guinea. Generated by earthquake. Waves ranging from 7m to 15m high. 3,000 deaths.
1999, Sep 15th - Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands. Generated by landslide. Two waves 5m high. Property damage, no human lives were lost
