Initial Minor Flood Warning for the Avoca River

Issued at 4:31 pm EDT on Thursday 6 October 2022

Flood Warning Number: 1


Minor flooding may develop along the Avoca River at Charlton Town from Friday.

In the 24 hours to 3:00 pm Thursday, rainfall totals of 10-40 mm have been recorded in the Avoca River catchment. Rainfall totals of 20-35 mm are forecast for the remainder of Thursday into Friday.

Avoca River to Charlton Town:

Minor flooding may occur along the Avoca River to Charlton Town.

The Avoca River at Charlton Township is currently at 3.71 metres and steady, below the minor flood level. The Avoca River at Charlton Township may exceed the minor flood level (4.00 m) during Friday.

Flood Safety Advice:

SES advises that all community members should:

  • Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
  • Never allow children to play in floodwater,
  • Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains during and after heavy rain,
  • Keep well clear of fallen power lines
  • Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks, and heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
