Climate of Eucla


The Eucla average annual rainfall of 267mm has a winter maximum and summer minimum. Monthly totals vary from 14mm in January to 31mm in May and 29mm in June. Rainfall decreases inland and is more uniformly distributed throughout the year.

Average maximum temperatures vary from 25-26C in the December to March period to 18C in July. Despite the mild average temperatures in summer about 10 days per annum experience maximum temperatures exceeding 35C and about 5 days exceed 40C. The extreme maximum temperature is 47.9C recorded on 3 January 1979. Temperatures near the coast can vary quite quickly in the warmer months with hot northerly winds normally followed by much cooler ones off the Southern Ocean. Minimum temperatures vary from 16-17C in the January to March period to 7C in July. Frosts occur on about two days per annum.

Summer average maximum temperatures are higher inland away from the effective influence of the onshore winds with Forrest about 120km from the coast having an average maximum temperature of 32.7C in January.
