The Eucla Meteorological Office (MO) was opened in 1995 and is staffed by two Bureau Technical Officers. This MO was relocated from Forrest to improve the amenities for staff and their families and to provide easier access for maintenance staff and contractors. The office is on the edge of the Hampton Tableland escarpment (an ancient emerged sea-cliff), overlooking the Roe Plains and Southern Ocean and surrounded by pristine bushland. The wilderness abutting the station contains numerous kangaroos and emus, spectacular caves, and massive sand dunes. Our meteorological observations at Eucla continue the fine work done by earlier co-operative observers and volunteers and commenced with the overland telegraph station records which commenced in 1876. The more recent co-operative observers were at Moopina Station and the Eucla Amber Motel. Besides providing data for forecasting and Australia's climate record Eucla is of prime importance because of the upper air information (winds, temperatures, etc.) it provides. This is not only useful to aircraft flying across the continent but to meteorologists providing forecasts for cities such as Adelaide. Eucla MO provides a service to the Motel, tourists, fisherman, and the occasional para-glider, humanizes, and cyclist. For some the winds are the key consideration, for others it is "When will it rain?".
