About Meekatharra Meteorological Office

Meekatharra Meteorological Office opened in 1944 in a building shared with Flight Services at the airport.

The present facility was commissioned in March 1974.

A wind finding (balloon tracking) radar was commissioned on 28 March 1974, with the first radiosonde flights, measuring upper air temperature and humidity, commencing with the introduction of PC-Cora on 3 August 1994.

Both of these were replaced by the current upper air system, a Vaisala Autosonde Mk I, on 15 June 1998.
