Fremantle Tornado

25 August 1999

A tornado left a trail of destruction when it touched down in Fremantle at about 6.00am on Wednesday 25th August 1999. The tornado, associated with the passage of a cold front, ripped the roof off a block of flats in East St, Fremantle, trapping several people inside the top storey for an hour or so. It continued in an eastward direction damaging houses and trees along a track that was 50-100 m wide and 8-9 km long, stretching from Fremantle to Ardross. Amazingly, the tornado had a lifetime of only about 10 minutes.
