Initial Flood Warning for the West Kimberley District

Flood Warning Number: 1

Flooding is expected in catchments north of Derby in the west Kimberley District due to forecast rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Marcus.

Tropical Cyclone Marcus is crossing the far north Kimberley coast as a Category 2 system. As the system tracks west to southwest over the far northern Kimberley today it will gradually weaken and is likely to become a Category 1 system later today.

Rainfall totals of 50mm to 100mm with isolated totals of 250mm are forecast in the North of Derby in the West Kimberley river catchments for the 24 hours to 9am Monday.

West Kimberley District:

Forecast rainfall is expected to result in river rises and areas of flooding in the Prince Regent and Isdell River catchments. Flooding may adversely affect road conditions and some roads may become impassable and some communities may become isolated.

Flood Safety Advice:

DFES advises people and communities to be aware that flooding is possible and be prepared to relocate equipment and livestock. Watch water levels. Travellers need to be aware that road conditions may be adversely affected and travel plans may need to be reconsidered. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and velocity.
