National water reform is accelerating under the Australian Government's Water for the Future program, a $12.9 billion investment to secure long-term water supply for all Australians. The program includes a significant commitment to reforming water information, led by the Bureau of Meteorology and supported by water data supplying agencies in the States and Territories.

National Seminar Series Dates

All seminars will follow a similar format, starting at 9.00am and finishing at 3.15pm.

National Water Information Seminar Series 2009

The National Water Information Seminar Series 2009 will feature presentations by senior Bureau and State and Territory representatives highlighting progress toward achieving our water information mission and describing the water information products planned for delivery over the next 6-18 months.

The presentations will demonstrate how:

  • the accuracy, coverage and currency of Australia's hydrologic observing networks is improving

  • water data from across the nation is being gathered and harmonised into a standard national format, and spatially-enabled for easy access by users

  • the Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS) will evolve over the next three years, following initial launch in early 2010

  • national water accounting standards have been developed and are being piloted in seven high-profile water management areas

  • the National Water Account and Water Resources Assessments will become comprehensive annual water products, commencing early 2011

  • a range of new water availability forecasting products, currently in early stage development, promise to enhance future water resources operations and planning.
