Work on the first National Water Account (NWA 2010) is well underway and it will be available on the Bureau's website by April 2011.

The Bureau is working with 28 water agencies to prepare water accounting reports for the Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Murray-Darling Basin, Ord, Perth, South-east Queensland and Sydney regions.

NWA 2010 seeks to reconcile water stocks and flows against annual allocation and take.

It will provide information that has previously been difficult to access or unavailable to general users in a standardised form. It builds upon significant water accounting developments under the Australian Government'sNational Water Initiative and feedback from the Pilot National Water Account released by the Bureau in December 2009.

Through the Water Act (2007), the Bureau of Meteorology has statutory responsibility for compiling and delivering comprehensive water information across Australia.
