From the Northern Territory to remote World Heritage areas in Tasmania, a new publication uses case studies to demonstrate how the $80 million Modernisation and Extension of Hydrologic Monitoring Systems Program (M&E Program) is contributing to improved water information for Australia.

The Australian Government's M&E program, administered by the Bureau, has funded 397 projects over four rounds with a total investment of just over $67 million since it began in 2007.

Wetter conditions favoured for eastern and western Australia

The national outlook for January to March 2011 shows that rain is likely for the eastern half of New South Wales, southeastern Queensland and in western parts of Western Australia.

The seasonal rainfall outlook across Australia is a result of cool conditions in the central equatorial Pacific Ocean associated with the current La Niña.

For the first time, Australians can see how much water is available across Australia using the Bureau of Meteorology's new Water Storage information product.

Water Storage provides water volumes for more than 250 publicly-owned storages around the country. It covers more than 90% of water held in public storage. Senator Don Farrell, Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, launched the Water Storage product in Canberra on Thursday, 21 October.
