13.7.1 Urban wastewater discharge to connected surface water

Supporting information

The volume reported in the water accounting statements (2,097 ML) represents discharge from several wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) operated by SA Water into rivers. The breakdown of wastewater discharge by WWTP is presented in the table below.

Quantification approach

Data source

SA Water: WWTP records.

Data provider

SA Water.

Method

Several WWTPs discharge treated wastewater to rivers within the Adelaide region, specifically:

  • Hahndorf
  • Bird-in-Hand
  • Angaston
  • Heathfield
  • Victor Harbor.

The metered discharge for 2009–10 from these WWTPs was supplied from WWTP records held by SA Water. These metered flows are manually read and recorded by plant operators.

Uncertainty

Uncertainty is +/–10% based on meter calibrations.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

  • Treated effluent from the Victor Harbor WWTP was discharged to Hindmarsh Reservoir for summer storage and then released to Inman River in winter months.
  • The line item does not include any discharge from community waste management schemes, including the Port Elliot WWTP, which are managed by local councils.
