Method

The McLaren Vale Prescribed Wells Area (PWA) was the only area practising carryover of groundwater allocations (referred to as ‘allocation credits’ by Department for Water) at the end of 2008–09. Carryover for 2008–09 and 2009–10 was extracted from the WILMA licensing database. The purpose of water allocations and carryover is not identified in the McLaren Vale PWA. Instead, irrigation licences were identified from the original purpose assigned to the bore when constructed. This information is recorded within the Drillhole Enquiry System database.

The Barossa Prescribed Water Resources Area (PWRA) began practising carryover of groundwater allocations at the end of 2009–10. Carryover had not been calculated for Barossa at the time the Adelaide region water accounting report was compiled and could not be included.

Assumptions, approximations and caveats/limitations

  • The current purpose of the groundwater licence is the same as when the bore was constructed and recorded in the Drillhole Enquiry System.
  • All bores with an irrigation purpose were captured in the Drillhole Enquiry System.
  • Bores with an irrigation purpose were used entirely for irrigation use.
  • Carryover occurred in the Barossa PWRA at the end of 2009–10, but had not been calculated at the time the Adelaide region water accounting report was compiled.
