The volume recognised in the water accounting statements (1,325 ML) represents the volume of water remaining following releases of water made available as part of the easing of Melbourne’s water restrictions to Stage 3 from Stage 3A. The Victorian Government announced on 02 April 2010 the return of 7,000 ML per year to the Yarra. This annual volume was allocated to the environment on a pro rata basis for the remaining days in the financial year, which means the pro rata allocation of 7,000 ML equates to 1,726 ML for the remainder of 2009–10.
Of this 1,726 ML, 401 ML was actually released (water that would have been pumped from the Yarra River at Yering Gorge had the cease-to-pump arrangements not been in place).
In theory, the 1,325 ML is carried over to the 2010–11 reporting year. In practice, this volume of water may become part of the environmental access entitlement in future years.
