13.7.2 Urban recycled water discharge to connected surface water

Supporting information

A licence is required for any party who plans to discharge recycled water into the connected surface water store. The Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) Point Source Database did not contain any recycled water discharges to the connected surface water store for 2009–10. This line item has been retained in the water accounting statement as there is potential for recycled water discharges to the connected surface water store in future years through the SEQ Water Grid.

According to the current South East Queensland System Operating Plan:

  • all reasonable action is to be taken so that the probability of key South East Queensland (SEQ) Water Grid storages falling below 40% of combined storage capacity over the next five years is less than 5%
  • when the total volume of water stored by key Water Grid storages falls below 40% of the total water storage capacity of these storages, the supply of purified recycled water to Lake Wivenhoe from the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme is to be maximised, subject to appropriate approvals from DERM through the Office of the Water Supply Regulator.

If and when purified recycled water is introduced into Lake Wivenhoe, this water will then be available for use throughout the entire SEQ region via the SEQ Water Grid.
