National Overview: Water market activity

Most water trade occurs in the Murray–Darling Basin. The volume of allocation trade in the region increased from the previous year due to the continued dry conditions in the region.

  • Australia’s water market facilitates the buying and selling of water entitlements and allocations to allow water to move between different urban, rural and environmental uses.
  • The Murray–Darling Basin accounts for more than 95% of surface water entitlement trade and almost all of the allocation trade in the National Water Account.
  • The volume of trade in surface water allocations in the region (5,648,000 ML) increased by 8% due to the continuing dry conditions across the region.
  • Queensland and South Australia were net importers of allocation water, while New South Wales and Victoria were net exporters.
