National Water Account 2019

Fitzroy: Water stores

  • Poor wet season rainfall contributed to low runoff across the region and a decrease in storage volumes.
  • Almost two thirds of the region's allocated water supply was for irrigation schemes, mostly from the Nogoa Mackenzie Water Supply Scheme.
  • Water supply for irrigation was 148 GL, more than 25% below last year's volume.

  • The volume of surface water in the region decreased from 599 GL at 1 July 2018 to 484 GL at 30 June 2019.
  • The balancing item is larger than the closing surface water store volume. Such a high balancing item is primarily attributed to uncertainties associated with the runoff estimate (see Methods).

Surface water flows

Figure S3 Water inflows and outflows for the surface water store during the 2018–19 year

  • The largest natural water flows in the region were runoff and outflow. Both were well below average due to the dry conditions across the region throughout most of the year.

Graph of allocated surface water diversions during the 2018–19 year in the region's water supply schemes

Figure S4 Allocated surface water diversions during the 2018–19 year in the region's water supply schemes

  • Total surface water diverted in the region was 318 GL.
  • 68% of the surface water diversions were associated with an allocation (217 GL); the remainder was non-allocated diversions.
  • Around 63% of the allocated diversions were for irrigation scheme supply, mostly from the Nogoa Mackenzie Water Supply Scheme; 33% were for individual users and 4% were for the urban system.
  • For a more detailed description of the water usage in the region, and the associated entitlements, see the Surface water rights note.

  • The groundwater in the region is equivalent to the licensed entitlement volume and, therefore, remains unchanged from year to year.

Groundwater flows

Figure S5 Water inflows and outflows for the groundwater store during the 2018–19 year

  • Groundwater movement across the region boundary as well as surface water–groundwater interactions are considered to occur within the region; however, these flows could not be quantified due to a lack of available data.
  • Total groundwater extracted in the region was 109 GL.
  • Around 12% of the groundwater extractions were associated with an allocation (13 GL); the remainder was non-allocated extractions.
  • 93% of the allocated extractions were for irrigation scheme supply; 3% were for individual users and; 4% were for the urban system.
  • For a more detailed description of the water usage in the region, and the associated entitlements, see the Groundwater rights note.
