Water Regulations 2008
The Bureau of Meteorology's new water information functions are contained in the Commonwealth Water Act 2007 under Part 7 - Water Information. These functions are supported by the Water Regulations 2008.
The Regulations came into effect on 30 June 2008. They define who must give specified water information to the Bureau and the time and format in which it must be supplied.
The Regulations individually name over 200 persons or organisations required to give the Bureau specified water information that is in their possession, custody or control.

About the Regulations
The Regulations use the term 'persons'. This term includes all individuals, trusts, companies, corporations as well as agencies of state, territory or Australian Governments, required to give water information to the Bureau. Currently, no individual people are named in the Regulations. The Bureau also refers to persons as organisations.
Who has to give water information?
Organisations named in the Regulations are divided into eight categories based on functions. Organisations may be in more than one category.

Compliance
We are currently working with organisations named in the Regulations to ensure they fully understand how to comply with the Regulations.
We encourage named organisations to become familiar with their requirements under the Regulations. You can do this by using our 'Water Regulations Online' tool to generate a customised report that lists your organisation's obligations.
