What is a Category of Water Information?

The types of water information to be given to the Bureau under the Regulations have been classified into nine categories of water information; each category is further defined by subcategories of water information.

A tenth category (Category 10) refers to descriptive and reference information about information in categories 1 to 9.

Category 1 - Surface water resource information

This category refers to information on the level and flow of surface water in watercourses.

Category 2 - Ground water resource information

This category refers to information on the level and pressure of groundwater.

Category 3 - Information of major and minor water storages

This category refers to information on major and minor water storages. It includes information on storage level, volume, discharge and transfers. Under this category, State agencies are also required to provide information on the location, capacity and ownership of major storages that may be contained in registers or other records.

Category 4 - Meteorological information

This category refers to information on meteorological phenomena that affect the availability of water. Rainfall, humidity, evaporation, pressure and solar irradiance are all included.

Category 5 - Water use information

This category refers to information on water use. It includes information on water takes, supplies, diversions and returns.

Category 6 - Information about rights, allocations and trades in relation to water

This category refers to information on water access entitlements, permanent and temporary water trades, water allocation announcements and permits.

Category 7 - Information about urban water management

This category refers to information on urban water resources and management. It includes information on use, supply, discharge and sourcing of water by urban water utilities.

Category 8 - Information about water restrictions

This category refers to announcements of water restrictions.

Category 9 - Water quality information

This category refers to information on water quality. It includes the salinity, acidity, turbidity, temperature and nutrient content of water samples.

Category 10 - Descriptive and reference information about water information in other categories

This category refers to descriptive and reference information including metadata. It includes ratings tables for storages and for channels and descriptions of water access entitlements and management areas. It also includes manuals or protocols of procedures used in water information management.
