Tropical Cyclone Outlooks

Notice of changes for the 09/10 season - There are three signifcant changes to tropical cyclone outlook services in 2009/10:

  • A new national seasonal outlook product has been issued by the National Climate Centre. This focuses on the broadscale aspects of the cyclone season.
  • From 1 November, the three-day outlooks for Central Indian Ocean and NW Australia have been combined into a single product (labelled "Western Region"). The remaining two products are not affected.
  • Probability categories in three-day outlooks are being altered to include a new "very low" category to indicate the occassions when there is virtually no chance of an event within three days

The Australian region tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April. Cyclones sometimes occur outside this period, mainly in the Central Indian Ocean southwest of Sumatra.

  • Seasonal outlooks are issued in October and may be updated during the season. They are removed at the end of the season.
  • Three-day outlooks are issued during the cyclone season for most areas. They are issued throughout the year for the Central Indian Ocean area.
