History of Coffs Harbour Meteorological Office

  • 13th November, 1940.
Establishment was provided for 2 forecasters and 1 Observer at Coffs Harbour Aerodrome, but remained unfilled until August 4, 1942 when a USAAF Observer Meteorological Office (MO) was established. Observations were carried out from 0315 - 2100 and pilot balloon flights conducted at 0300, 0900 and 1500.
  • 1st February, 1943.
USAAF withdrew and a RAAF Observer / Interpreter attached to 12 OBU was established 2 days later using a converted oil shed as a MO. In May 1943 the MO was moved to the old operations building. Forecasting status commenced July 1943 and continued till July 19, 1944 when it was downgraded to Observer / Interpreter status.
  • 14th November, 1945.
Station Closed
  • 1948 - 1951.
Repeated attempts to reopen the MO were thwarted by a housing shortage.
  • 9th August, 1951; Observations began 0600 (Local) by Officer in Charge L.R. Lloyd.
The original Meteorological Office was located on the Southern corner of what is now the General Aviation hard standing area. Single person operations continued until 2 other staff members arrived late January 1952. (P.J. Sullivan & M.A. Wheate)

  • 22nd July 1963, WF2 Wind finding radar commenced operations.
Prior to the commissioning of the WF2 radar for wind find operations, upper level wind flights had been undertaken by use of a Pilot Balloon Theodolite. Night time flights were made possible by suspending a candle beneath the Hydrogen filled balloon.

The WF2 was originally located to the NW corner of the building approximately 20 metres from Hogbin Drive. After the commissioning of the WF100 radar, the WF2 was relocated to the NE corner in August 1988 to act as a static display.

  • 25th September 1967, Operations moved to New Building.
Observations moved to the new purpose built $70,000 Meteorological Office in September 1967 with the official opening occuring 13th October 1967. The new building was built around the existing balloon filling facilities which had been erected several years earlier for use with the WF2 Radar.

  • 1985, Building extended.
With the increasing complexity of technology in the Observation network, it was decided to permanently appoint a Electronics Officer at Coffs Harbour to maintain electronic equipment throughout the area. The Observation office was extended to include a Regional Workshop and an upgraded radar.

  • March 1987, WW/WF100 Radar Commissioned.
The WW/WF100 radar is a dual function radar acting as an auto track radar in Wind Find mode and providing early warning of approaching precipitation in Weather Watch mode.

  • October 1989, Instrument Enclosure moved.
To accommodate a proposed helipad in the general aviation area of the airport, the instrument enclosure was moved approximately 200 metres West to it's current location.
  • 24th December 1996, RadioSonde Flights Commenced.
With the anticipated closing of Williamtown Meteorological Office, an Upper Air program commenced at Coffs Harbour to serve as a replacement. At 9am and 9pm, a radiosonde was included with the balloon flight which transmitted temperature, humidity and pressure data as it ascended through the atmosphere. The program ceased late September 1998 when it was decided to leave Williamtown open.
  • 4th December 2001, RWind Flights Commenced.
Rwind flights commenced at the station increasing the resolution and accuracy of Upper Winds reported. The Rwind system uses forecast pressure levels instead of 'standard levels' to determine winds.
