A climatological station was first established
on Lord Howe Island over one hundred years ago. Rainfall readings
commenced in 1886 and the recordings of climatological data began
the following year. These observations were recorded by a succession
of local residents until 1935. The Bureau established an office on
the island in 1939. The original site was in a building near the Flying
Boat Base, now the Information Office. In November 1954 the office
was moved to a better observing site adjacent to Middle Beach on the
eastern side of the island. The need to collect more accurate data
for aircraft using the island's airstrip led to the relocation of
the station to its present position on the 18th November 1988.
