History of Moree Meteorological Office

Morre History
  • A continuous rainfall record for Moree goes back to 1879, when temperature and rainfall  were recorded by Moree Post Office staff.
  • With the expansion of the Weather Bureau's network throughout Australia in the 1950's, a Bureau office opened at Moree in 1964 and began a complete program of meteorological observations at Jones Avenue.
  • By the early 1990's it was evident that with the ever increasing use of new technology and the ageing of the building, that the office had ended it's useful life. Increased urbanization around the Jones Avenue Office was also beginning to affect the station operations.
  • In 1995 the current office was built in Blueberry Road, adjacent to the airport, which has proved to be beneficial for the Bureau of Meteorology, the aviation industry and other service users.
  • June 2000 saw the installation of the 'Autosonde' equipment, followed in 2001 by the Ceilometer and Visibility meter. This equipment, in conjunction with the Automatic Weather Station, helps to provide, continuously to users, current weather conditions.
