An international workshop on the subject of tropical weather forecasting is being organized in Darwin, Australia from Monday 22 to Friday 26 January, 2001 sponsored by the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographical Society with the support of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
A number of forecasters from tropical forecast offices and leading atmospheric dynamicists are being invited to come together to articulate their forecast problems and to review the state of knowledge relevant to tropical weather forecasting, including the special requirements of numerical weather prediction in the tropics.
Darwin is a small, but modern city with excellent hotel and recreation facilities and is the location of the Bureau of Meteorology's Regional Forecast Centre in the Northern Territory of Australia, perhaps one of the best equipped forecast centres in the tropics with its association with the Darwin Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC).
January is an interesting time of year for meteorology, being in the Australian monsoon season.

During January and February, Darwin is at the height of the wet season, and active bursts of the monsoon can occur for periods of a few days to a week or more. These periods are characterised by broad areas of cloud and rain, with sustained, moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.
In between active bursts are the "break periods", characterised by light winds, isolated shower and storm activity, and occasional gusty thunderstorm squall lines.
Rainfall is recorded on an average of two in every three days in Darwin, with a monthly average of 418 mm.
Tropical cyclones are uncommon in January with only two (Rachel and Bruno) coming within 200 km of Darwin in the past 37 years.
