History of Mildura Meteorological Office

history

The office was opened on the 26th of August 1946.

The original office was part of what was a Royal Australian Air Force Training Section during World War 2. The office was then located adjoining the northeastern side of the building that is now used by the vintage car club. In November 1969, the office was relocated into what was then the new Department of Civil Aviation (now Airservices Australia) building.

On the 27th of February 1970, the newly constructed Mildura Radar Station was commissioned by Mr W. G. Turnbull, C.B.E. M.P.

Among the guests at the commissioning were Mr Keith Hannay, Regional Director for Victoria; Mr Mal Lammond, Supervising Meteorologist Victoria; and Mr Keith Stibbs, Supervisor of Aviation Victoria.

From November 1969 to the 13th of July 1989, all observational duties, except upper atmospheric observations, were performed at the Department of Civil Aviation building. On the 14th of July 1989, all observations were performed at the radar station.

The facility now enjoys a significant position in the Sunraysia community, as an information office. Its capacity to support such activities as the MildurAir '02 event ably demonstrates this. It provides data on a regular basis to extensive media and industry groups, and is now expanding its scope by developing this web site that will hopefully, become publicly accessible in the future.
