3. How is a severe tropical cyclone different from a non-severe cyclone?

Tropical cyclones are classified as severe when they are producing 'very destructive winds' having sustained surface winds of at least 120 km/h near the centre and gusts in excess of 170 km/h. This corresponds to cyclone categories 3, 4 and 5.
