About Kalgoorlie-Boulder Meteorological Office

Paddy Hannan

  • The Office first opened on 22 March 1939 by Jack Glennister.
  • All staff in the Bureau transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force Directorate of Meteorological Services on 1st July 1940 for the duration of hostilities.
  • In May 1942 Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport became RAAF Base: Care & Maintenance Unit, Boulder (4AD).
  • In 1946 the Bureau reverted to civilian status and control returned to the then Department of Interior.
  • In April 1947 the Care & Maintenance Unit was disbanded and the airport returned to civilian control.
  • The Bureau shared the Operations Building with the then DCA Aeradio Unit (later called Flight Service) until the early 1970's. By then office accommodation had become too small so the Bureau converted the OIC's residence next door for use as the office.
  • By the late 1980's it was evident that with the ever increasing use of new technology and the ageing of the building, the office had ended it's useful life.
  • In September 1993 the current building was occupied and an array of high-tech equipment installed. The radar came on line a month later.
  • The 'Autosonde'equipment was installed in October 2000.
