8 July 2001

A small waterspout at Meadow Springs golf course near Mandurah caused minor damage.

23 August 2001

Thunderstorms along a pre-frontal squall line caused damaging winds near Margaret River, Bunbury and in Perth’s southern suburbs.  The storms produced 2 narrow paths of damage, one through Westfield, Kelmscott, Roleystone and the other through Como, Bentley, Queens Park.  Earlier in the day another storm cut a narrow swathe of damage through properties and bushland south of Margaret River.  Cape Leeuwin recorded a wind gust of 120 km/h.

5 September 2001

Two thunderstorms caused hail damage to crops from Wongan Hills to Cunderdin.  Hailstones as large as 20 cent pieces (2.8cm) were reported from near Dowerin.

28 September 2001

Severe thunderstorms occurred in the eastern Goldfields.  Leinster recorded wind gusts to 100 km/h.

29 September 2001

A tornado caused a narrow path of damage 2km long in the Perth suburb of Armadale.

5 October 2001

A thunderstorm near the northern Wheatbelt settlement of Balla produced hail up to the size of a 50 cent piece flattening crops and causing minor property damage.

19 October 2001

A tornado passed near Twin Peaks station in the Murchison.  The tornado was observed for 20 minutes but caused no damage to property or stock.

21 October 2001

A hailstorm in Perth devastated strawberry and vegetable crops in the Wanneroo area with losses estimated at $2 million.

7 November 2001

A severe thunderstorm that produced golf-ball sized hail caused damage to the northern Goldfields town of Laverton.
Hail, the size of a 10 cent piece, stripped trees in a 4km long path through scrubland on the Gascoyne property of Yarrabubba, southeast of Meekatharra.

15 November 2001

Severe thunderstorms caused damaging hail the size of golf balls at Hyden and Narembeen in the Wheatbelt, flattening crops and causing significant property damage.

16 November 2001

Severe thunderstorms were identified in the Esperance region and east of Kalgoorlie.

18 November 2001

Thunderstorms in the Perth Metropolitan area overnight caused power outages and property damage.  The worst affected area was in the northern suburb of Ridgewood where damaging localised winds affected more than 25 houses.
Severe thunderstorms also struck many parts of the northern and central Wheatbelt with marble to golf ball sized hail destroying crops from as far north as Eneabba, Carnamah and Wugin, south to Wongan Hills and Dowerin.

30 November 2001

Severe thunderstorms produced golf ball sized hail and damaging winds that flattened crops and damaged sheds, silos and houses near the northern Wheatbelt town of Mukinbudin.

4 December 2001

A severe hailstorm produced large hail, strong winds and flash flooding that casued widespread damage to the eastern South Coast.  The worst affected region was Esperance and surrounding areas.

14 January 2002

Severe thunderstorms caused hail, strong winds and heavy rain in the Lower West district including Perth.  Hail the size of 20 cent pieces struck Regans Ford near Gingin, north of Perth.  Strong winds, estimated to 180 km/h, in a 200m wide path caused a tanker to shift 40m from its moorings and dented tanks at the BP Refinery causing damage to over $1 million.  Quairading, about 150km east of Perth recorded 48mm during the storms.

16 January 2002

Severe thunderstorms occurred through the Lower West district including Perth.  Hail was reported through the eastern suburbs.

17 January 2002

Severe storms occurred through the southern and eastern Wheatbelt.  Possible tornado 70km south of Moorine Rock (west of Southern Cross), snapped branches, uprooted trees, brought down power lines and took a verandah roof off.

18 January 2002

Severe thunderstorms occurred in the Goldfields.  Norseman recorded wind gusts to 110 km/h.

19 January 2002

A thunderstorm produced 26mm of rain in 15 minutes and small hail at Wiluna in the northern Goldfields.

22 January 2002

Two houses lost part of their roofs and 3 carports were blown away when a severe thunderstorm struck Wittenoom in the inland Pilbara.  Residents estimated wind gusts of 150 km/h.

3 February 2002

A severe thunderstorm took roofs off several houses in the Chapman Valley.  Nabawa received 45mm.

9 March 2002

Storms developed along a trough causing hail, measured to table-tennis size (3.8cm) and golf ball size (4.4cm) near Trayning.

15 April 2002

A thunderstorm caused strong downbursts at Tammin, stripping trees and lifting roofing iron from a few buildings.

2 May 2002

A thunderstorm produced a weak tornado that caused only minor vegetation damage at Northampton.

3 May 2002

A thunderstorm produced strong winds that uprooted trees and caused minor property damage at Dalyup, west of Esperance.

6 May 2002

A strong cold front crossed the lower west coast causing severe local wind damage to the Perth hills suburb of Mt. Helena, Mundaring and Sawyers Valley.  Damage was also reported in Bunbury, Margaret River, Albany and Mt. Barker.  Cape Naturaliste recorded wind gusts to 100 km/h.
A severe thunderstorm also passed through the eastern Wheatbelt causing localised structural damage in the Ravensthorpe area with gusts recorded to 102 km/h.

10-11 May 2002

A strong front caused gales across the lower southwest late on the 10th and early on the 11th. Large gum trees fell on two houses in Callista and Wembly Downs, otherwise damage in Perth was generally minor. The highest recorded gust was 117 km/h at Cape Leeuwin, while several coastal sites also recorded gusts over 100 km/h. The storm generated a large swell, recorded to almost 6m at Rottnest Island, that caused severe coastal erosion, possibly the worst since the May 1994 storms.

3-4 June 2002

A front caused minor flooding in Perth. Mt Lawley recorded 53mm. Several houses in Scarborough and Trigg were inundated with water as stormwater overflowed drains. Lightning caused house damage in Scarborough. Exmouth recorded 304.6mm to 9am on the 4th and suffered flooding that caused power outages, erosion and damage to five trawlers at the marina. Port Hedland recorded 127mm the following day.

13 June 2002

Storms ahead of a front caused a tornado just before 3am in Rockingham unroofing seven properties. The strongest reported wind gusts were 128km/h at Cape Leeuwin.

14 June 2002

A strong front caused widespread gales in southern parts. There were numerous reports of fallen trees causing generally minor structural damage. The highest wind gust was 124km/h at Cape Leeuwin and many centres recorded winds exceeding 100km/h as far inland as Katanning. The strong winds caused significant soil erosion across the Great Southern where farmers are still awaiting sufficient opening winter rains for cropping.

30 June 2002

Overnight storms unroofed four houses and uprooted trees in Mandurah as a cold front swept across the Lower Southwest. Wind gusts were recorded to 109km/h.
