Rainfall

The NSW statewide average rainfall for January 2009 was 22 mm, compared to the statewide historical average of 68 mm (average calculated over 1961 - 1990). This was the 18th lowest rainfall on record for the state. The southwest, coastal NSW, as well as Northern Tablelands and Central Western Slopes and Plains have received very low rainfall. The main areas to receive around average rainfall were in the northwestern quater of the state and an area north of Canberra and the northern Riverina. Much of the rainfall received in these areas was due to storm activity associated with the in land trough that typically stretches from the northwest to the southeast of the state at this time of year. Generally the low rainfall experienced over much of the state was associated with blocking highs that were present in the Tasman for a significant portion of the month. These high pressure systems tended to block the passage of frontal systems pushing them further south resulting in an overall dry January.

The Murray Darling Basin (MDB) received a basin wide rainfall average of 24 mm, compared to the historical average of 57 mm.

Temperature

Daytime average maximum temperature for the state was 34.2°C, which is 2.5°C above the historical average of 31.7°C (average calculated over 1961 - 1990). This is the 9th highest statewide average maximum on record for NSW and the 9th consecutive January with above average maximum temperatures and significantly warmer than last January (which was milder due to La Niña conditions that were experienced in 2007). This was partly due to very warm conditions in the second half of the month whilst early January was much closer to average summer conditions. The only areas to experience close to average maximum temperatures were the northeastern and far southeastern parts of the state. The rest of the state was above average, with an extensive area of southern NSW recording over 3°C above the historical average.

In the last week of January a blocking high pressure system in the Tasman Sea directed a hot northwesterly airflow to southeast Australia. As a result much of southeastern Australia, including southwestern NSW, experienced a heatwave with many locations, including Broken Hill, Griffith and Hay, recording up to 5 consecutive days over 40°C. Climate change is expected to not only increase average temperatures but also the frequency and severity of extreme temperature events. While any one event cannot be simply ascribed to climate change, the heat wave at the end of January is certainly consistent with that expectation.

The overnight average temperature for the state was 18.8°C which is 1.1°C above the historical average of 17.7°C. The majority of inland NSW had above average minimum temperatures with areas in the northwestern and central NSW experiencing minimum temperatures up to 3°C above average. Minimum temperatures for the rest of the state were close to average.
