Queensland in June 2007


Wet June brings record cold temperatures

Summary

A series of cloud bands brought rainfall to many parts of the state, with unseasonable falls in the tropics leading to record June rainfall totals in a number of places.  An outbreak of cold southerly airflow combined with widespread cloud cover to produce record cold daytime maximum temperatures over much of the state.

Rainfall

A cloud band which moved over most of Queensland between the 5th and 7th of the month was related to an upper level low which approached the state from the south.  Rain occurred over most districts, with moderate to heavy falls over parts of the Carpentaria and Central Coast.  Chillagoe, with 64.0 mm and Moranbah, with 43.4 mm both reported their highest daily June rainfalls on record.  

Another extensive cloud band, associated with an upper trough, moved slowly across much of the state from the 17th to the 22nd of the month.  Several locations in the Central Lowlands and Carpentaria broke their June daily rainfall records on the 18th, including Toorak Research Station with 66.7 mm, Mt Isa Mine with 65.4 mm and Gue with 39.0 mm.  

Monthly rainfall totals in June were very much above average for much of the state, but below average over the southern Warrego and southwest.  See maps of total rainfall and rainfall deciles.

A number of places within a broad region of the state stretching from the Carpentaria in the northwest to the east Darling Downs in the southeast received their highest June rainfalls on record.  Bulliwallah, with 203 mm for the month almost doubled its previous June record of 101.8 mm (average 26.2 mm, 93 years of record). Other places which recorded their highest June rainfall on record include Townsville Aero with 110 mm (average 21.1, 67 years of record), Richmond Post Office with 164.3 mm (average 15.8, 117 years of record) and Mount Isa Mine with 124.2 mm (average 11.8, 74 years of record).  A list of rainfall records appears below.  

Brisbane recorded 112.6 mm for the month, which is 166% of its long-term June average and the most rainfall it has received since January 2006.

Temperature

Many long-standing lowest daily maximum temperature records were broken in June, mostly during the period from the 20th to the 21st of the month.  During this time much of Queensland experienced remarkably cold conditions due to a combination of an extensive, slow moving cloud band with rain and a cold south-southeasterly airflow over much of the state.

New daily maximum temperatures for June were recorded at a number of locations including Boulia Airport with 9.0°CC (average 23.3°CC, previous record 11.1°CC, 119 years of record), Richmond Post Office with 11.2°CC (average 26.1°CC, previous record 13.0°CC, 114 years of record), Burketown Post Office with 13.4°CC (average 28.0°CC, previous record 15.9°CC, 108 years of record), Mt Isa Aero with 9.4°CC (average 24.9°CC, previous record 13.0°CC, 41 years of record), and Townsville Aero with 13.9°CC (average 25.6°CC, previous record 14.6°CC, 67 years of record). 

Taking the state as a whole, and based on records since 1950, the average maximum temperature for the month was the coldest on record.  Average maximum temperatures were 3 to 6 degrees below average over much of the state. Exceptions were the region from the central coast and highlands through to the southern border at 2 to 3 degrees below average, and the Peninsula and the southeast corner which were 1 to 2 degrees cooler than average.  See maps of maximum temperature anomalies.

Many places recorded their coldest average daily maximum temperature for June including Boulia Airport with 19.3oC (average 23.3oC, previous record 19.7oC, 119 years of record), Richmond Post Office with 21.1oC (average 26.1oC, previous record 22.8oC, 115 years of record), Camooweal Township with 21.2oC (average 25.9oC, previous record 22.0oC, 100 years of record) and Maryborough with 20.2°C (average 22.4°C, previous record 20.6°C, 99 years of record).  A full list of new records appears below. 

Monthly mean minimum temperatures were cooler than average from the Northwest Gulf to the Warrego. Parts of the Peninsula, the Southeast and Central districts recorded warmer than average overnight temperatures, while remaining areas were typically within a degree of average.  See maps of minimum temperature anomalies.

Brisbane’s mean maximum temperature for June was 20.4°CC, compared to a long-term average of 20.9°CC for the month.  The mean minimum temperature was 12.1°CC, compared to long-term average of 10.9°CC.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Normals are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably. *In this case, normals from a nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics  (these are marked with an *).

The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of "normal" rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
