Greater Adelaide in September 2022: wet with cool days
Rainfall in September was above average at all sites in Adelaide and the Hills. Daytime temperatures in September were cooler than average throughout Greater Adelaide and night-time temperatures were also generally cooler than average.
Wetter than average
- Rainfall in September was above average at all sites in Adelaide and the Hills, ranging from 115% of average at Adelaide Airport to 169% of average at Parafield Airport.
- At many sites across Greater Adelaide, it was the wettest September since 2016.
- The wettest day in most suburbs was on the 9th, when there were widespread falls across Greater Adelaide of more than 10 mm and higher daily totals in the Hills, with 43.8 mm recorded at Ashton Co-op.
- On the 16th, a cold front crossed the city and thunderstorms brought small hail to Noarlunga, with many sites recording more than 10 mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th.
- The strongest wind gust recorded during the month was 83 km/h at Mount Crawford AWS on the morning of the 17th.
- The wettest site in September was Piccadilly (Woodhouse), which recorded 156.0 mm for the month.
Cool days
- Daytime temperatures in September were cooler than average across Adelaide and the Hills.
- At most sites across Greater Adelaide, the mean maximum temperature for September was the lowest since at least 2016.
- Most days during the month were cooler than average.
- The warmest days were on the 13th and 20th, with Noarlunga recording Greater Adelaide's highest temperature of 21.4 °C on the 20th.
- Mean maximum temperatures for September ranged from 2.4 °C below average at Kuitpo Forest Reserve to 0.9 °C below average at Mount Lofty.
- Night time temperatures in September were generally cooler than average.
- Nights were cooler than average for much of the first week of September and the coldest temperature recorded in Greater Adelaide during the month was 0.3 °C at Edinburgh RAAF on the 3rd.
- Mean minimum temperatures for September ranged from 1.0 °C below average at Noarlunga to 0.7 °C above average at Mount Barker (although, temperature data from the Mount Barker site is unavailable for the cool night of the 24th).

- Total rainfall for Adelaide (West Terrace / ngayirdapira) was 58.8 mm, which is 116% of the long-term average of 50.8 mm.
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Adelaide (West Terrace / ngayirdapira) was 17.2 °C, which is 1.2 °C below the long-term average of 18.4 °C.
- The warmest day was 20.4 °C on the 13th, and the coolest day was on the 2nd when the temperature reached 13.9 °C.
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Adelaide (West Terrace / ngayirdapira) was 9.1 °C, which is 0.2 °C below the long-term average of 9.3 °C.
- The coldest morning was 3.9 °C on the 1st, and the warmest morning was on the 14th when the minimum temperature was 14.6 °C.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Greater Adelaide using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This summary includes data from observing sites in or near the Greater Adelaide “Greater Capital City Statistical Area” (GCCSA). The Australian Bureau of Statistics designed the GCCSAs to “include the population within the urban area of the city, as well as people who regularly socialise, shop or work within the city, and live in small towns and rural areas surrounding the city. It is important to note that GCCSAs do not define the built up edge of the city. They provide a stable definition for these cities and are designed for the output of a range of social and economic survey data.”
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 October 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
