Shaping our future strategy
We are developing our next strategy to ensure we continue to meet the evolving needs of Australians, government, industry and communities in an increasingly complex and changing environment.
As part of this work, we have commissioned an independent external review. It will assess how we deliver value to the nation and identify opportunities to enhance our impact, effectiveness and responsiveness.
The bureau's weather, climate, water and space weather services play a vital role in supporting public safety, economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and community wellbeing across Australia.
We are committed to strengthening public trust by ensuring our future direction remains firmly aligned with the needs and expectations of the Australian community, customers and stakeholders.
The review will consider the bureau's services, communications, reputation, competitive landscape and partnerships to ensure it remains well positioned for the next decade.
The review is focused on ensuring the bureau remains a trusted, resilient and future-ready institution, capable of delivering enduring value for Australia in a rapidly changing world.
Mr Phillip Glyde, former CEO of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), has been appointed to lead the review.
The independent review panel will provide a final report by 31 March 2027.

Review terms of reference
- The Chief Executive Officer and Director of Meteorology seeks an external and independent review to:
- assist with defining and understanding the current and future needs of the bureau's key customer groups.
- provide assurance to government and other stakeholders of the direct and indirect economic and public value of bureau services.
- contribute to the reinforcement and/or restoration of public sentiment and trust in the bureau.
- The review should consider the bureau's:
- service offering and alignment with the current and future needs of the Australian public and government policy objectives
- public communication effectiveness and responsiveness to stakeholder needs
- reputational management and resilience strategies, and opportunities to develop partnerships to support these strategies
- the current and future competitive landscape for the services provided by the bureau and the strategic challenges and opportunities likely to shape the bureau's value over the next decade
- unmet customer demand and alignment with the bureau's legislative mandate.
- The review will be conducted by an independent panel comprising strategic expertise in policy development, communications, government service delivery and organisational effectiveness.
- Panel members will consult key customer groups, stakeholders and bureau staff through surveys and confidential interviews. The review will also consider key data and documents, including strategic planning documents, governance papers, recent business reforms, and results of staff surveys.
- The independent review panel will provide a final report by 31 March 2027.
- The final report should make recommendations that can be used to inform the development of the bureau's next strategy and outline performance measures that could be used to track and communicate the bureau's value.
- The independent review panel will provide briefings to the CEO and the Minister for the Environment and Water, with the support of an externally appointed review support team procured by the bureau, and secretariat assistance from the bureau and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
