Rainfall - A wet month for NSW
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 78.3 mm during March, well above the historical average of 49 mm. Rainfall was above average across 95% of the state, with an average rainfall of 62.2 mm in the Murray-Darling Basin, well above the average of 38.5 mm and the wettest single month since March 2012. While few stations broke March total rainfall records, several along the east coast experienced their wettest March in more than twenty years, including Gunnedah, Murwillumbah, and Moruya.
Most of the rain was associated with a series of surface troughs and associated thunderstorms throughout the month, with thunderstorms producing localised rain on most days. Heavier falls occurred in central and eastern NSW on the 1st and 2nd, with two-day totals on up to 175.2 mm at Yarras, as well as in eastern NSW between the 24th and 29th associated with a series of surface troughs and an upper level cold pool.
The heaviest falls were along the south coast associated with a localised low pressure system, with daily falls reaching 225 mm at Hampden Bridge in the Illawarra on the 25th while Moruya recorded 234 mm during the 48 hours to 9 am on the 27th. This was followed by very heavy rain in the northeast, with 317 mm at Boat Harbour (Rous River) and 246 mm at Murwillumbah to 9 am on the 28th.

The statewide average maximum temperature during March was 0.2 °C above the historical average, with most of the state recording temperatures within 1 °C of the average. There were several cool spells associated with the passage of surface troughs and rainfall, with particularly cool days in central NSW associated with rain events on the 1st and between the 24th and 27th.
In contrast, the statewide average minimum temperature was 1 °C above the historical average, making it the warmest March since 2007. Most of eastern NSW recorded minimum temperatures more than 1 °C above average, with some short-record (less than 30 years) stations in the southeast experiencing their warmest March nights on record. One feature of the month was a lack of cool nights, with Goulburn and Tumbarumba recording their fewest nights below 10 °C in almost 50 years of record, as well as the fewest nights below 15 °C at Moruya.
The mean temperature for NSW was 0.6 °C above average, the warmest since 2009.

Thunderstorms were frequent across NSW during March, many of which produced very heavy rainfall over short periods. The heaviest falls were reported in the Illawarra region on the 24th, with 55 mm in 30 minutes at Cronulla and 50 mm in 60 minutes at Balgownie, causing localised flooding and road closures as well as one fatality. There were over 700 calls to the SES, primarily for flooding and roof damage, with extensive water damage to a school in Bulli. Heavy rain also caused minor flooding in the Northern Rivers over the 27th and 28th, with 317 mm in 24 hours at Boat Harbour.
Many stations across northeastern NSW recorded wind gusts above 90 km/h during storms on the 15th and 16th, reaching 115 km/h at Evans Head, while a tornado was reported as causing damage in the Bega region on the 5th. Hail was reported across southern Sydney and the Illawarra on the 22nd, with 4 cm hail at Menai, while 4 cm hail was also reported at St Clair in western Sydney on the 30th.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 April 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
