New South Wales in April 2014: Warm April, wet in the south

Rainfall during April was well above average in southern and western NSW but average to below average elsewhere. Most of the rain fell during the first two weeks, with widespread rain recorded in southwest NSW on the 4th-5th and 10th-11th associated with two surface troughs and cloudbands. Temperatures were well above average during the month (tenth-warmest on record for mean temperatures), particularly in northern NSW where rainfall was lower.

  • Slightly below average rainfall for NSW and the Murray Darling Basin, but wettest since 2009
  • Wettest April since 1990 for Wilcannia, Broken Hill, Cooma, and other southwest NSW stations
  • Equal-warmest April on record for Coffs Harbour
  • Seventh-warmest mean minimum temperatures on record, particularly between 1-11 April

Rainfall

New South Wales recorded a statewide average rainfall of 42.7 mm during April, slightly below the historical average of 46.7 mm. Totals in the Murray Darling Basin were equal to the average (38.1 mm), with both regions recording the wettest April since 2009. Rainfall was well above average in southern and western NSW, the wettest since at least 1990 for several locations including Wilcannia, Broken Hill, and Cooma. In comparison, totals were average to below average in northeastern NSW and much of the coast.

Most of the rain fell during the first two weeks of the month. A surface trough and associated cloudband produced widespread rain and thunderstorms in central NSW as it crossed the state on the 4th and 5th, with heaviest falls in the ACT including a 48-hour total of 75 mm at Tuggeranong. A second trough with embedded lows also produced heavy falls in southern NSW on the 10th and 11th, with 48-hour totals reaching 98.6 mm at Mulwala and three stations recording their wettest April day on record.

The remainder of April was generally dry, with the exception of periods of onshore flow and coastal rain. Morning thunderstorms caused heavy rain on the Central Coast on the 25th, reaching 102.2 mm at Dora Creek, while storms caused heavy rain on the north coast on the 28th, reaching 90 mm at Minnie Water and Woolgoolga.

Temperature

The average temperature for NSW during April was 1.1 °C above average and the tenth-warmest on record, as well as the warmest since 2007. Temperatures were above average across the state but particularly warm in northern and eastern NSW where rainfall was lower, including the equal-warmest April on record for Coffs Harbour.

The statewide average maximum temperature was 0.7 °C above average, with daytime temperatures well above average in northern NSW and close to average in southern NSW, reflecting the pattern of rainfall during the month. Days were very warm at the start of the month, reaching 36.3 °C at Wanaaring on the 2nd, with very warm temperatures in the Ballina region on the 12th and along the northern border between the 23rd and 25th.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.5 °C above average and the seventh-warmest on record, with most of the state recording nights more than 1 °C above average. Nights were very warm at the start of the month, with temperatures more than 5 °C above normal across much of the state between the 1st and 11th due to the passage of two surface troughs and associated cloudbands.

Other Phenomena

Thunderstorms on the 3rd caused locally heavy rain and strong winds, with flash flooding in Wollongong and Broken Hill and roof damage to a hotel in Bargo.

A storm on the central coast on the morning of the 25th caused heavy rain, with large hail damaging roofs in Bulahdelah.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 May 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
