NSW in August 2014: Wet in the east, cold in the south

August was the wettest for NSW since 2003, with the statewide average rainfall 33% above average. Most of the coastal region recorded at least double the August average, although few records were broken, with well above average totals across most of northern inland NSW. In contrast, rain was well below average in the southwest, including the driest August since at least 1982 in Albury.

Most of the rain fell during two events. A surface trough produced rain in northern and central NSW over the 16th and 17th, before developing into an East Coast Low that impacted the south coast over the 18th and 19th. A period of moist onshore flow, combined with a series of coastal troughs and embedded lows, also produced heavy rain and flash flooding across the coast between the 26th and 28th.

The statewide mean maximum temperature was 0.8 °C above average and the mean minimum was equal to the historical average, with particularly cool minimum temperatures in southern inland regions. Nights were more than 5 °C below normal in southern NSW between the 2nd and 9th, while Canberra recorded its equal-longest spell below -4 °C.
