New South Wales in December 2015: A warm end to the year

New South Wales recorded above average temperatures during December 2015, with below average rainfall. Several thunderstorms affected the state, with one causing substantial damage on the 16th.

  • Below average rainfall
  • Eighth-warmest December on record for statewide average mean temperatures
  • Thunderstorms and tornado cause damage on the 16th

Rainfall was 21% below average for New South Wales during December. The southern border and parts of northwest NSW recorded below average rainfall, with some parts of the southeast recording their driest December in at least 20 years. Totals were closer to average in central NSW, with well above average totals in parts of the Mid North Coast as well as the Far West.

The majority of the rain fell between the 21st and 23rd as a cold front and surface trough crossed the state. Parts of the Sydney and Hunter regions recorded more than 100 mm of rain during the 48 hours to 9 am on the 23rd. This was followed by further showers in the northeast, with locally heavy totals including 106.2 mm to 9 am on the 25th at Byron Bay. Thunderstorms also produced locally heavy falls on 2, 8-10, 16-17 and 27 December, particularly in the east of the State.

The most severe thunderstorms occurred in the Sydney and Illawarra region on the morning of the 16th, which produced large hail, strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding. Daily rainfall totals reached 106.8 mm at Sanctuary Point for the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th, while hail of more than 2 cm in diameter was reported in locations including Cronulla and Blackheath. A category F2 tornado, also on the 16th, caused substantial damage at Kurnell in southeast Sydney. A wind gust of 213 km/h was recorded at Kurnell, the strongest wind gust on record for New South Wales.

Both maximum and minimum temperatures were above average for the State as a whole during December, with the statewide average mean temperature the eighth-warmest on record. Temperatures were warmest in the south and west of the state, particularly during the first half of the month when a significant heatwave affected southeastern Australia (see Special Climate Statement 53), with closer to average temperatures in the northeast. Southern New South Wales recorded very warm temperatures between the 18th and 20th, with some stations recording their hottest December day or night on record.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Wednesday 6 January 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
