- Rainfall was above average across most of the northwest, the Carpentaria District, and the far southeast of the NT, and close to the long-term average elsewhere
- Thunderstorms and showers were common in the first half of the month, with heavier falls observed across the northern half of the NT, and Bullo River had its highest April daily rainfall on record
- Year-to-date rainfall across the NT is 1% below the long-term average
- Northern wet season rainfall across the NT (1 October to 30 April) was 20% below the long-term average
Third-warmest April on record

- A number of sites had their highest April temperature on record mainly at the start of the month, or later in the month around the coastal Top End
- Minimum temperatures were warmer than usual across most of the NT, and Lajamanu Airport had its highest April mean daily minimum temperature on record while both Darwin and Alice Springs had their highest April mean daily minimum temperature since the 1990s
- There were some very warm nights at the start of the month, with a number of locations reporting their warmest April night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
- Both Tindal RAAF and Lajamanu Airport had their highest April mean temperature on record
- For the year-to-date, the mean maximum temperature across the NT is 1.65 °C above average and the eighth-warmest on record, and the mean minimum temperature across the NT is 1.60 °C and second-warmest on record
- For the northern wet season (1 October to 30 April), the mean, maximum and minimum temperatures across the NT were all the second-warmest on record and 1.79 °C, 2.13 °C and 1.45 °C above average respectively

- A continental squall-line thunderstorm passed over the Carpentaria District on 4 April generating heavy rainfall. McArthur River Mine recorded 71.6 mm in 1 hour, exceeding the 10% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) rain rate (10% AEP is roughly equivalent to a 1-in-10 year event, and qualifies as a rainfall rate conducive to flash flooding and hence the severity status)
- Severe thunderstorms affected parts of the south-western Top End on 10 April, generating 120 mm rainfall in 5 hours at the Bradshaw Training Range site. The 3-hourly total at this site of 109.4 mm had a rainfall rate exceeding the 10% AEP threshold

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 May 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
