Rainfall
Rainfall across Queensland was mixed: below to very much below average rainfall in areas of the northwest of the state located in the Lower and Upper Carpentaria rainfall districts along with parts of the Upper Western rainfall district and also the central west of the state. In contrast, the southeast quarter of Queensland from about St Lawrence on the east coast and extending inland down through the eastern parts of the Warrego and Maranoa districts and to the New South Wales border had above to very much above average rain. This contrasts starkly with February, which was dry in the southeast but wet in the north and west.
Averaged across Queensland, rainfall was 78.0 mm, the lowest March rain since 2009 and 14 % below the mean of 90.8 mm.
There were a number of periods of extremely high daily totals through the month, which caused flash and riverine flooding and broke some records.
On the 1st, the most significant rainfall was about the Leichhardt River with 24 hour totals to 9am ranging between 50 to 80 mm.
On the 2nd, a weak monsoon trough lying through the Gulf of Carpentaria and across the northern Coral Sea brought scattered showers and thunderstorms about the northwest.
Within the first week and a half of the month, the most significant rainfall totals were around the Peninsula and the north tropical coast: Kowanyama recorded 131.6 mm, Lotus Bird Lodge 136.8 mm and Cape Flattery 105.8 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 11th.
On the early morning of the 11th, ex-tropical cyclone Gillian was situated over land about 10 km north of Pormpuraaw on the monsoon trough that lay from the Top End of the Northern Territory, through the Gulf of Carpentaria to tropical cyclone Hadi over the northern Coral Sea. Gale force winds and heavy rainfall started to ease about the east coast but high falls occurred in the northern tropics: Daintree Village got 294.0 mm, Low Isles received 198.6 mm and Whyanbeel recorded 184.8 mm - all in the 24 hours to 9am on the 12th.
On the 19th, a strengthening high in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge along the east coast of the state, and a slow moving surface trough extended from the northwest of the state into the southern interior. In combination with an upper level trough over southwestern Queensland, as the strong upper level trough moved eastwards into Central Queensland on the 24th, the two systems intensified into a significant rain-bearing weather system for eastern and central Queensland. Notable totals from this even included Tully Sugar Mill with 278.5 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 21st and Ingham with 185.8 mm in the following 24 hours. Daintree Village had the highest monthly rainfall total with 1108 mm and Tully Sugar Mill only marginally behind with 1049.6 mm. (Bellenden Ker Top Station's rainfall has not been received at the time of publication).
The highest recorded daily rainfall total was at Pacific Heights (in Yeppoon) with 324.6 mm on the 27th but although significant this did not break the highest rainfall record for the site (it received a 24 hour total of 572.4 mm to 9am on 27 March 1990). However the previous day Pacific Heights recorded 232.4 mm bringing the two-day accumulation to 557 mm at this site. The second-highest daily rainfall for March 2014 was at Yeppoon The Esplanade with 295.8 mm on the 27th (this was a record highest daily rainfall for this site, although it has only been open for 20 years) and the previous day (the 24 hours to 9am on the 26th), Yeppoon The Esplanade recorded 205.8 mm, with the two-day total of 501.6 mm. The further heavy falls in the Yeppoon area and surrounds led to localised flash flooding causing significant road closures, extensive property damage and reports of landslides (see Significant Weather below).Later in the evening of the 26th, the low level trough extending from the central interior to the Maranoa intensified over the following 24 hours, with heavy falls through the southern Central Highlands, Maranoa and Darling Downs during the 27th, and shifting southeast into the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts that evening and into the 28th with the passage of the trough. Many sites in the greater southeast broke daily rainfall records, including Amberley, Somerset Dam, Tarome and Cambooya Post Office. There were several sites with their highest daily rainfall on record, their highest total March rainfall on record or their highest total March rainfall for at least 20 years.
Tropical cyclones
Tropical cyclone Gillian formed in the southeastern Arafura Sea well to the northeast of Gove on the 8th. It weakened and was downgraded to below tropical cyclone intensity just before it crossed the western Cape York Peninsula during the 10th. It moved westwards and back over water on the 13th, then took a northeasterly path and reintensifying to a category 1 cyclone on 14 March. Gillian then moved northwards over the Gulf Of Carpentaria with minimal impact on the surrounding coastline. It was downgraded once more to below tropical cyclone intensity on the 15th before moving steadily west across the Arafura Sea.Early on the 10th, a low over the Coral Sea about 370 km to the northeast of Hamilton Island and moving to the northeast away from the coast ws named tropical cyclone Hadi. By 4pm on the 11th, the system was downgraded to a tropical low, as it took a west-northwest track well away from the east coast of Queensland.
Severe Thunderstorms and Significant Weather
A severe thunderstorm caused a wind gust of 117 km/h on the 17th at Camooweal Township.
A landslide between Yeppoon and Emu Park due to heavy rainfall on the 26th, with over one hundred SES (State Emergency Service) requests for assistance, mainly around Gladstone, Yeppoon and Rockhampton and the Burnett Highway at Mount Morgan was closed due to a rock slide (information provided by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Management Report).
On the 30th, severe thunderstorms producing damaging winds and with large hail near Miles at approximately 1:40pm, along with 54.2 mm of rainfall in 1 hour at the Miles weather station at approximately 2 pm.Flooding

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 April 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
