Queensland in April 2014: Warmest night-time temperatures on record; tropical cyclone Ita brings heavy rain and flooding

Temperature

The state-wide mean temperature was the second-highest on record for Queensland, 2.01 °C above the long-term average of 23.6 °C after the +2.20 °C anomaly record set in 2005.

The warmest places on average were across the Gulf Country in the northwest, with Century Mine recording a mean temperature of 29.4 °C. Also in the northwest, the second and third-warmest mean temperatures were at Normanton Airport with 29.3 °C and Cloncurry Airport with 29.1 °C respectively.  A number of sites also had their highest April mean temperature on record and a few sites had their highest April mean temperature in 25 or more years.

Maximum temperature

State-wide, the maximum temperature was the sixth-warmest on record, 1.85 °C above the long-term average and the highest since 2005.  Most of western Queensland from around Century Mine in the far northwest extending down to the eastern Maranoa and Warrego was over 2 °C above average, with much higher anomalies (3 - 4 °C above) from Mt Isa down to Charleville and extending west to Urandangi. The highest anomalies, areas of 4 to 5 °C above average, were recorded around the Channel Country.  

The hottest days occurred at the beginning of the month in the far west of the state. Birdsville Airport reached 40.5 °C on the 2nd, and Urandangi Aerodrome soared to 40.3 °C on the 1st.  The warmest days on average, also occurring across the interior and western districts, saw Julia Creek Airport reach an average maximum temperature of 36.8 °C and Century Mine with 36.4 °C.

A number of temperature records were set.

Minimum temperature

State-wide, the minimum temperature was the highest on record, 2.17 °C above the long-term average, and surpassing the previous highest recorded minimum in April 2000 by 0.12 °C. The four highest values, since high quality records began in 1910, have all occurred from 2000 onwards. 

More than 50% of the state's area had a minimum at least 2 °C above average, and just over 17% of Queensland had over 3 °C above.  The area around Charleville and Tambo, and further west around Winton, Windorah and down to Birdsville in the southwest were 3 to 4  °C above the 1961-90 average. Most of western Queensland, spanning from the far northwest around Burketown in the Gulf Country and extending through the interior to Goondiwindi in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district experienced overnight temperatures that were at least 2 °C above the 1961-90 average.  

A number of temperature records were set over a broad belt of western Queensland extending from Mount Isa to Charleville.

Tropical cyclone Ita

Tropical cyclone Ita formed as a tropical low southwest of the Solomon Islands in the northeastern Coral Sea on 2 April. As the tropical low drifted westwards, the system slowly intensified to a category 1 cyclone on the afternoon of 5 April. As the cyclone traversed westwards, the system stalled south of Sudest Island in Papua New Guinea for two days and continued to intensify. By 11am on 8 April, Ita was a category 3 system.

On 10 April, Ita intensified extremely rapidly and reached category 4, and within a span of 6 hours it reached category 5, while turning southwest towards the far north Queensland coast. Ita made landfall near Cape Flattery, at approximately 10pm on the evening of Friday 11 April. The system weakened in the hours leading up to its crossing, and was rated as a category 4 at landfall (pending post-analysis).

After crossing land, Ita tracked southwards and through the inland North Tropical Coast district, and weakened quickly, passing about 20km west of Cooktown as a category 2. Ita weakened even further to a category 1 cyclone, and then to a tropical low by the afternoon of 14 April as it moved along the coast towards the southern Coral Sea.

The strongest recorded wind gust from the passage of Ita was at Cape Flattery with 159 km/h just before 9pm on the evening of Friday 11 April.

Rainfall 

Rainfall was generally above average on the central and northern coasts and in the Gulf Country, and parts of the far southwestern interior. There were areas of below to very much below average April rainfall over the greater southeast extending into the Darling Down, Maranoa and Warrego, and parts of the southern, central and northwestern interior. Elsewhere, rainfall was close to average.  State-wide the rainfall of 34.47 mm, 18% below the long term average.

Heavy rainfall (daily falls exceeding 200 mm) associated with tropical cyclone Ita were mostly confined to the northern tropics as the system made landfall late on 11 April. As it tracked southwards, rain then fell in the areas over the southern parts of the North Tropical Coast district extending into the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and central coasts of Queensland on 12 April, and further south along the exposed Capricornia coast on 13 April.

The highest recorded daily rainfalls were in the Herbert North Coast district; Mutarnee Store with 320.0 mm on the 13th, followed by Cardwell Marine Parade with 307.0 mm, also on the 13th. There were a number of daily rainfall records set on the 13th and 14th.

Rainfall on the weekend of the 12th and 13th in the southeast coastal district was due to an upper trough moving eastwards across southern Queensland, interacting with mid-level moisture associated with tropical cyclone Ita, leading to cloud and a rainband across southeast Queensland. Orographic enhancement of rainfall on the Sunshine Coast hinterland led to the heaviest falls over this area. Daily rainfall totals between 50 to 100 mm were recorded around the Sunshine Coast and hinterland areas.

The highest monthly total was recorded at Tree House Creek with 763.6 mm on the north tropical coast, with the majority of the rain falling as a result of tropical cyclone Ita. Some sites had their highest April rainfall on record.

There were a few sites that had their lowest April rainfall on record including Logan City Water Treatment Plant, along with record equal-lowest at Boulia in the northern Channel Country, and Goondiwindi in the Darling Downs, both recording zero rainfall during April.

Flooding

There was a short, but significant flood event resulting from tropical cyclone Ita in far north Queensland. Flooding above the moderate level (and in most instances above the major flood level) occurred along the far north coast of Queensland in the following basins: 

• Daintree (Daintree Village)
• Barron (Cairns Airport)
• Mulgrave/Russell (Gordonvale)
• Tully/Murray (Euramo)
• Johnstone (Innisfail Wharf)
• Herbert (Ingham and Halifax)
• Haughton (Giru)
• Don (Bowen)
  

Severe thunderstorms

During the evening of 3 April, severe thunderstorms produced damaging winds in the Channel Country in far southwest Queensland, with Ballera Gas Field recording a maximum wind gust of 120 km/h.

On the evening of 6 April, severe thunderstorms affected Maroochydore, Caloundra and Maryborough with some producing damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Flash flooding and fallen trees were reported across Bribie Island, along with a waterspout off shore.

Severe thunderstorms across the northern Central Coast district on 13 April produced heavy rainfall in the Bowen area with 112 mm in 60 minutes. Although rainfall rates decreased by late afternoon, severe thunderstorms still affected the towns of Proserpine, Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands.
