Queensland in September 2014: Wet start to spring through the central interior; warm days and cool nights
The statewide average rainfall was 17% above average for September. Areas that received above average rainfall were mostly confined to the Central Highlands, Central Coast and Capricornia districts, and a small area in the north of the Cape York Peninsula. Parts of the north and northwest recorded below average falls while the remaining parts of the state recorded near-average September rainfall.
Very little rainfall was recorded in the first week of the month. An upper level trough over western Queensland, a deepening surface trough over central inland Queensland and a weak surface low on the trough to the southwest of Longreach contributed to moderate falls being recorded over the state's central interior on the 8th. Another surface trough over the interior on the 13th brought more rainfall to parts of the Central Coast, with moderate totals over the adjacent inland areas of the Central Highlands and Coalfields district on the 14th. Very little rain fell in the state from the 14th to the 21st. By the 21st, a surface trough located over the interior deepened and, assisted by an upper level disturbance, brought light to moderate falls to the central interior. This was followed by widespread rainfall with moderate totals to most of the southeast quarter of the state. Some heavier falls were recorded in isolated areas of the Central Highlands district, with some new highest on record daily rainfall.
Maxima were above average in the north and western half of the state, with parts of the Gulf Country and Cape York Peninsula recording very much above average mean maximum temperatures. Areas in the Central Highlands and parts of the coast around Townsville had cooler than average days, while the remainder of the state recorded near-average daytime temperatures.Minima were below average in far north Cape York Peninsula and parts of the Gulf Country as well as parts of the Capricorn Coast and adjacent inland areas. Average minima were recorded through the remaining parts of the state, with only small pockets around the central and southwestern interior recording above-average overnight temperatures.
- Above average rainfall statewide
- Wetter than normal through Central Queensland
- Warm days in the west, cool nights in the north

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 October 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
