Monday, 1 December 2014 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in November 2014: Record heat; dry conditions across most of the State
Queensland's state-wide maximum, minimum and mean temperatures were the highest since 1910 for November, with anomalies of +2.88 °C, +2.33 °C and +2.61
°C respectively. The statewide maximum temperature surpassed the
previous record set in 1915 (where the anomaly was +2.22). In terms of
area, just over 40%
of Queensland had the highest November maximum temperature on
record. Exceptionally hot conditions were experienced over the
Darling Downs
and Granite Belt, Southeast Coast and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett
districts on the 15th and 16th, and through the Maranoa and Warrego
districts on the 22nd and 23rd. Several locations had their hottest days and warmest nights on record, as well as their warmest mean temperatures (the average of the mean maximum and mean minimum).
Several
stations in the central west had a record number of consecutive days
equal to or above 40 °C. Longreach had 13 days equal to or above 40 °C (previous record was 9 days in row, over 1 - 9 November, 1965) and Cloncurry
had 12 days equal to or above 40 °C (previous record was 9 days on
two occasions: from the 4 - 12 November 1958, and 1 - 9
November 1965).
Rainfall was below average across the east of Queensland, very much below average in the north, and above average for parts of the west. Averaged across the State, just under one-fifth of Queensland was in the lowest 10% of records (decile 1). Some relief from the extended dry in the west came late in the month, with most of the far west from the Gulf Country to Birdsville recording average to above-average falls. Cape York Peninsula, eastern Gulf Country, the north tropical coast and Tablelands and large areas of the central and southern interior had well below average November rainfall.
- Hottest November maximum and minimum temperatures since 1910
- 16th-lowest rainfall on record
- Record runs of consecutive days equal to or above 40 °C for numerous sites, including Longreach and Cloncurry

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 1 December 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
