Wednesday, 1 April 2015 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in March 2015: Hot across the State; tropical cyclone Nathan makes landfall
Queensland had its warmest March on record in 2015, with the statewide mean temperature a record 2.25 °C above average. There were two periods of particularly hot weather: one that affected the west at the start of the month, and another that peaked in the west and south on the 19th and 20th. Rainfall was below average for most of the State, despite localised heavy rain from tropical cyclone Nathan.
- Record high Queensland mean March temperature
- Record high mean March maximum temperatures
- Record high mean March minimum temperatures
- First time a Queensland station has recorded a mean maximum temperature at or above 40.0 °C
- Exceptional autumn hot spell, peaking on the 19th and 20th
- Dry conditions across most of the state, apart from the far northern Cape York Peninsula
- Tropical cyclone Nathan made landfall on the 20th between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery
Queensland had its warmest March on record in 2015, with the statewide mean temperature a record 2.25 °C above average, exceeding the previous record from 1933 by 0.36 °C. The statewide mean daily maximum temperature was also a record at 2.88 °C above average (0.21 °C above the previous record from 1915); as was the statewide mean daily minimum temperature at 1.62 °C above average (0.15 °C above the previous record from 2007). Hot conditions were experienced across much of western Queensland at the beginning of March, before heat retreated to parts of the far northwest on the 5th. Extreme heat again extended southwards from the 17th, as a northwest airflow developed across the State. A significantly hot air mass formed ahead of a surface trough entering Queensland from the southwest, with the most widespread and extreme heat occurred on the 19th and 20th. The northwest, central west and southern parts of Queensland were the most affected, with numerous high temperature records set. Birdsville recorded 46.5 °C on the 19th, the highest temperature ever recorded in Australia in the second half of March. The 19th was also Queensland's hottest March day on record, 38.73 °C in area-averaged terms, surpassing the previous record of 38.41 °C set on 1 March 1923. See Special Climate Statement 51. It is the first time a Queensland station has recorded a mean monthly maximum temperature above 40.0 °C in March (Julia Creek with 40.5 °C, Century Mine with 40.2 °C and Winton with 40.5 °C).
The mean rainfall across the State was 47% below the historical average. A large expanse of Queensland experienced well below average rainfall during March. Only parts of the Cape York Peninsula, and isolated pockets across inland Queensland recorded above average falls. The generally low rainfall came despite some localised very heavy falls associated with tropical cyclone Nathan. On the 10th, a low pressure system located about 500 km northeast of Cooktown developed into a tropical cyclone, and was named Nathan early on the 11th. Heavy rain fell between Cooktown and Cairns and across far north Queensland as the system approached the coast, with the highest daily rainfall totals recorded to 9am on the 13th, including Hazelmere with 260 mm, and Weipa with a new high daily rainfall total for March, with 244.8 mm. The system briefly tracked eastwards away from the coast, before being steered westwards towards the north tropical coast on the 18th. The system re-intensified as it neared the coast, making landfall between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery as a category 4 system early on the 20th. Moderate rainfall totals were recorded along the north tropical coast, but northern inland areas suffering long term rainfall deficiencies failed to record any significant falls.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 April 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
