Queensland in April 2017: Dry in western, central and eastern parts

Rainfall was below average across much of the State, except the far north and along parts of the southern border. It was record dry in some places. Warm days were experienced in the west, while cool days were reported in central and southeastern Queensland

Dry in western, central and eastern parts

• Rainfall was below average in the west, central districts and in the east with some locations recording their lowest April rainfall on record, or in recent decades
• Overall, near-average rainfall in the far north, and along the southern border of Queensland
• At the end of the month, a developing tropical low moved westwards through the Torres Strait, with heavy rainfall recorded about the tip of the Cape York Peninsula

Warm days in the west; cool days in central Queensland

• Well above average daytime temperatures in western Queensland
• Overall, cool days in central and southeastern parts of the State with some locations reporting their coolest April days on record, or in recent decades
• For April, warmer than usual nights in the southwest and northeast of the State; cool nights across central Queensland
• Cold nights occurred across central Queensland at the end of the month, with a number of locations reporting their coldest April night on record, including Mackay, Mt Isa, Springsure and Richmond

Flooding from ex-tropical cyclone Debbie

• The Fitzroy River at Rockhampton peaked at 8.9 m in the early hours of 7 April. This was the fifth-highest flood peak recorded at Rockhampton in over 160 years, with the highest peak being 10.11 m in January 1918
• Waterford, on the Logan River, peaked at 10.4 m on the evening of 1 April, the highest since the flood peak of 12.95 m in January 1974
• Major flood levels were receding at Beenleigh on the Albert River and Amberley on Warrill Creek at the very beginning of April
