Monday, 2 July 2018 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in June 2018: A dry start to winter; some cold nights
Rainfall was below average across the north, the central and southern interior, and along parts of eastern Queensland. June was wetter than usual in the northwest and west. Daytime temperatures were warmer than usual in southern and southeastern parts of the State. Overnight temperatures were cooler than usual across much of eastern and northern Queensland
Dry in the north and east of the State
- June rainfall was below average in eastern and northern Queensland, and in parts of central and southern interior districts. A few sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record or in several decades
- Apart from a few showers along the east coast, there was little or no rainfall recorded in Queensland during the first half of June
- June rainfall was above average in the west and northwest, and close to average elsewhere in the State
- Moderate falls were recorded from north of Mt Isa, south to Boulia and east to Winton from the 13th to 15th as a series of upper level troughs moved eastwards across Queensland, with showers, storms and areas of rain over western and northwestern districts
- At the end of the month, a surface- and upper-level trough generated areas of rain in the southwest, central interior and southeastern districts
Warm days in southern and southeastern districts
- Overall, daytime temperatures were warmer than usual, and 1.15 °C above the long-term average for June
- Warmer than usual days were experienced in southern and eastern districts, with the warmest days occurring across the southeast
- Daytime temperatures were close to average in northern and northwestern Queensland
- Warm, clear days in the first half of the month resulted in above average mean maximum temperatures across the southwest, and southern and central interior
- A cold southerly burst kept days cooler than usual west of the Great Dividing Range during the middle of the month
Cool nights in northern and eastern Queensland
- Overall, mean minimum temperatures were 0.01 °C below the long-term average
- Cool nights were recorded in the north and across much of the eastern half of Queensland, with much cooler than usual nights extending from the northern to southern inland
- In the middle of the month, low pressure over the Tasman Sea and a large high over South Australia directed cool, dry air into Queensland, resulting in clear skies and widespread frost over inland districts.
- Cold nights associated with a southerly burst, resulted in a few sites reporting their lowest June temperature on record between the 18th to 20th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
