Thursday, 1 November 2018 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC14R0
Queensland in October 2018: A warm month; wetter than average in the east and north
Rainfall was above average across much of eastern and northern Queensland, but near or below average through the central west and southwest interior of the State. It was an active month of severe thunderstorms. Queensland recorded its third-warmest October on record in terms of mean temperature.
Wetter than usual in the east and north, but dry in western districts
- Rainfall was mixed across the State: it was wetter than usual in eastern and northern Queensland
- Persistent showers and thunderstorms produced moderate falls in the northern tropics and eastern Queensland throughout the month; some locations reported their highest October daily rainfall on record
- A number of sites had their highest total October rainfall on record or in several decades
- In contrast, parts of the central west and southwest interior received below-average rainfall, exacerbating rainfall deficiencies at 6-, 9- and 18- month periods
Warmer than usual October
- Queensland had its third-warmest October on record in terms of mean temperature
- The statewide mean maximum temperature was the fourth-warmest on record; mean minimum temperature ranked the fourth-warmest on record
- Warm days were recorded over western parts of the State at the start of the month, due to warm northerly winds ahead of a surface trough
- Cooler than usual days were experienced over much of the southeast quarter of Queensland between the 12th and 15th, as persistent showers and areas of rain kept daytime temperatures below average
- A period of sustained above average temperatures were experienced across western and southern Queensland from the 22nd, with temperatures consistently reaching the high 30's to low 40's
- An upper ridge then became established over the State, leading to hot to very hot temperatures over inland parts, and temperatures 5 °C to 8 °C above average
- Hot, northerly winds ahead of an inland surface trough resulted in
some locations across the central west (Longreach, Isisford, Barcaldine
and Thangool) reporting their highest
October temperature on record in the last week of October
Severe thunderstorms across the State
- An active month in terms of severe thunderstorms: numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds during October
- Damaging winds and hail up to 3 cm in diameter reported on the 3rd in Silverleaf (between Proston and Murgon)
- Hail greater than 2 cm in diameter along with damaging winds on the 8th and 9th around Wamuran, Nambour, Beerwah and Fernvale in southeast Queensland
- Two tornadoes were observed on the 11th: one at Coolabunia (southeast of Kingaroy) and the other at Tansey (near Murgon), as well as hail up to 7 cm in diameter in the Wide Bay and Burnett district
- Severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts up to 144 km/h at Blackwater on the 11th, and large hail stones were reported in several locations including Gympie, Gin Gin, Maryborough, Windera, Proston and Murgon
- 2 cm hail was observed at Kelso (in Townsville) on the 12th, and Cardwell on the 13th; hail this size is unusual in the tropics
- 75 mm of rain fell in 30 minutes at Elbow Valley (south of Warwick) on the 18th
- Numerous reports of hail over 2 cm from Toowoomba and Warwick on the 24th
- Extensive crop damage and large hail was reported from Harrisville on the 25th
- A wind gust of 117 km/h and hail up to 6 cm in diameter was recorded at Rolleston on the 29th

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Thursday 1 November 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site, based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile
8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
