Queensland in May 2019: dry across central to southeast Queensland

Rainfall was below average from central to southeastern Queensland, extending into the central and southeastern interior. Above average rainfall was recorded in small areas in the southwest, the north tropical coast and Cape York Peninsula. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average in the Gulf Country and southeast, while mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual in the north, east and parts of the southwest.

Drier than usual from central to southeastern Queensland; wetter than usual in the far Cape York Peninsula

  • Rainfall was below average from central to southeastern Queensland extending into the central and southeastern interiors. A few sites had their lowest total May rainfall on record or their lowest total May rainfall for several decades
  • Above average rainfall was recorded in small parts of southwestern Queensland and in far northern Cape York Peninsula and parts of the north tropical coast, but near-average elsewhere
  • A slow-moving upper-level trough and associated surface trough moved through southwestern and southern Queensland at the start of the month, and led to showers and thunderstorms with moderate falls in the southwest, then the central to southern interior of the State
  • The surface trough moved eastwards, and produced widespread shower activity over the southeastern quarter of the State on the 4th before moving offshore
  • Onshore flow brought showers to parts of the east coast for much of the month, with more frequent showers about the north tropical coast
  • Tropical cyclone Ann formed over the Coral Sea on the morning of 12 May, and peaked at category 2 intensity on 13 May as it tracked westwards towards the Queensland northeast coast
  • The system transitioned to an ex-tropical low before crossing the coast around Lockhart River in the far northern Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded in the northern Cape York Peninsula and North Tropical Coast districts

Warmer than usual days and nights overall in the Gulf Country and southeast interior

  • Maximum temperatures were generally warmer than average in southern and the southeastern quarter of the State as well as the Gulf Country
  • Parts of the far western interior and the Central Highlands experienced cooler than average daytime temperatures
  • Very warm overnight temperatures were recorded at the beginning of the month, and a few sites had their warmest May night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
  • There were areas of well above average mean minimum temperatures reported about the Gulf Country, north tropical coast and southern interior
  • Warmer than usual nights were experienced across most of the State apart from the central west and far southeast, where these areas were close to average
  • It was a cold end to the month, with a few sites reporting their lowest May temperature on record on the 31st

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 June 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
