Remote Islands and Antarctica in January 2019
Jump to a map of the areas covered in this summary
Australia's Indian Ocean islands
- Temperatures on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were above average for most of the month, but the 28th was relatively cool, as were the mornings of the 21st, 27th and 28th
- Overall, daytime temperatures at Cocos Islands Airport were almost a degree warmer than average, whilst night-time temperatures were half a degree warmer than average
- Several bursts of monsoonal rain from the 20th onward, including 73.8 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 28th, ensured that Cocos Islands Airport had more rainfall than usual for the month
- Christmas Island Airport had its highest January temperature on record with 31.6 °C on the 19th, with the 18th (30.9 °C) and 20th (31.4 °C) also exceeding the previous record January record set in 2016
- Observing equipment at Christmas Island Airport was not working for the first half of the month, so total rainfall and average temperatures cannot be reliably calculated
Australia's Pacific Ocean islands
- Lord Howe Island Airport had its driest January on record with just 1 mm of rainfall for the whole month, well below the previous record from 2014 and less than 1% of the long-term average; this follows the driest December on record
- It was also the warmest January on record for Lord Howe Island, with the mean daily maximum at the airport 2.6 °C above average and more than half a degree warmer than the previous record from 2010, and the mean daily minimum equalling the record from 2017 at 1.5 °C above average
- Lord Howe Island's overall mean temperature was a record 25.1 °C, which is 2.1 °C above average, 0.6 °C warmer than the previous January record set in 2017, and the warmest month for any time of year (edging out February 2017)
- Norfolk Island's rainfall of 4.4 mm for the month was the second-driest January (behind 1946), and follows the second-driest December on record
- The mean daily maximum temperature on Norfolk Island was more than a degree above the January average, and the mean daily minimum was almost a degree warmer than average
Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic territories
- Temperatures were relatively mild at Mawson in the middle of the month, but a spate of cold weather in the final weeks meant the mean maximum temperature was only 0.3 °C warmer than average and the mean minimum temperature was 0.1 °C cooler than average
- Cold weather from the 20th onwards meant temperatures at Davis were a little below average overall
- Most days were relatively mild at Casey and the mean maximum temperature was half a degree above average, but cold nights in the first fortnight of the month gave a mean minimum temperature a little below average
- Macquarie Island was a little warmer than average by day, and close to average by night
- Rainfall on Macquarie Island was well above average, with precipitation on every day of the month

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated.
Days marked with → are part of a longer accumulation, which is shown on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a precipitation report of zero; days left blank have no precipitation report (which often indicates no precipitation fell). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Remote Islands and Antarctica using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Friday 1 February 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the precipitation is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average precipitation.
The Rank indicates how precipitation this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low precipitation is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much precipitation has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
