Adelaide in September 2015: Mild days, cool nights with near average rainfall

Days were generally mild but night time minimum temperatures were cooler than average for the month. Rainfall was generally near average, though tending below average for several locations.

  • Mild days to start spring
  • Coolest September nights since 1994
  • Average rainfall in the city, but from two major rain events, early and mid-month

Overall, maximum temperatures were generally close to average across the Adelaide region. The coldest day for Adelaide during the month was on the 2nd with a maximum temperature of 14.0°C. Nights were generally cooler for Adelaide. The September mean minimum temperature for the city was the coolest since 1994. Though minimum temperatures were cooler on the plains, night-time temperatures were closer to average for the more elevated Adelaide Hills. The coldest night for any location was recorded on the 8th, at Mount Barker when the temperature dropped to 1.0 °C.

The wettest period of September for the Adelaide region occured during the first few days of the month as a series of cold frontal systems and southwesterly airstream crossed the region. The passage of a cold frontal system on the 2nd and then another on the 7th each delivered daily rainfall totals between 15 to 20 mm across the region, with higher totals of 20-30 mm in the hills. Ashton in the Adelaide Hills recorded the wettest day of the month with 37.6 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 8th. Much of the 52.2 mm Adelaide recorded for September, was recorded in the 24 hours to 9am on the 17th when a low pressure trough that had moved over central districts produced thunderstorms about the city. Several stations in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide reported totals of between 10 to 20 mm on the 17th, with small hail blanketing some areas east of the city.

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with → are part of a longer accumulation, which is shown on the final day.
Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre.
Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Adelaide using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 October 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
