South Australia in February 2025

Rainfall

  • Rainfall totals in February were less than average across all of South Australia, with most of the state receiving less than half its February average (based on 1961–1990).
  • Rainfall totals were very much below average (lowest 10% of all years) in some central and eastern agricultural districts.
  • South Australia's area-averaged rainfall total in February was 4.3 mm, 78% below the 1961–1990 average, which was drier than February 2024 but wetter than February 2023.
  • The drier than average February followed on from South Australia's driest January since 2013.
  • For the 13-month period since February 2024, most of South Australia's agricultural districts are in severe or serious rainfall deficiencies (rainfall totals in the lowest 5% or 10%, respectively, of all such periods since 1900).

Temperature

  • South Australia's area-averaged mean maximum temperature was the warmest on record for all Februarys since 1910.
  • Mean maximum temperatures in February were very much above average (highest 10% of all years since 1910) across most of South Australia.
  • South Australia's area-averaged mean maximum temperature was 37.5 °C, 3.43 °C above the 1961–1990 average (the state's previous warmest February was 3.36 °C above average in 2007).
  • On the 12th, Oodnadatta reached 48.7 °C, a new South Australian state record for February.
  • During heatwave conditions on the 11th and 12th, several sites had their hottest February day on record.
  • Multiple sites had their highest February mean maximum temperature on record or their highest February mean maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
  • Mean minimum temperatures in February were above average across most of South Australia, including areas of very much above average (highest 10% of all years since 1910) in the far north-west and north-east of the state.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were close to average in some central and eastern districts.
  • South Australia's area-averaged mean minimum temperature was 20.5 °C, 1.62 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
  • South Australia had its highest mean minimum temperature for February since 2007.
  • On the 12th, Tarcoola Aero and Cape Borda had their warmest February night on record.
  • On the 15th and 16th, a strong southerly airflow with gusty winds brought temperatures up to 10 °C cooler than average (based on 1961–1990) to central and eastern areas of South Australia.
  • On the 16th, Gluepot Reserve (Gluepot) had its coldest February night on record.
  • A few sites had their highest February mean minimum temperature for at least 20 years.

  • February 2025 continued a run of 10 consecutive warmer than average (based on 1961–1990) months for South Australia.
  • Several sites had their highest February mean temperature on record or their highest February mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated.

This statement has been prepared based on information available on Sunday 2 March 2025. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases, the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
